Description

Tree: Height 15-20 m with a large, flattened crown (Silba 1986).

Bark: Tan, exfoliating in fine plates or scales, with small lenticels. Inner bark red-brown (Silba 1986).

Leaves: Alternate, lanceolate to elliptic, bluntly acute, 6-8 cm × 1.5-2 cm, shortly petiolate. Juvenile leaves oval-lanceolate, attenuate at the base, 8-10 cm × 2.6-3.5 cm. Buds globular (Silba 1986).

Cones: Globular, 9 cm × 7 cm, on a thick peduncle (Silba 1986).

Cone scales: Ovoid, obtuse (Silba 1986).

Pollen cones: Cylindrical, 4-5 × 0.8-1 cm, scales imbricate and slightly denticulate (Silba 1986).

Seeds: Rounded with an obovoid wing on one side (Silba 1986).

Range

"NE New Caledonia: Mt. Panie, 1000-1640 m" (Silba 1986).

Remarks

This species is listed as "LR/cd" (lower risk, conservation dependent) by the WCMC, which adds: "A species restricted to high altitude rainforests on Mt. Panié. It is locally abundant and in an area which is relatively inaccessible and well protected."
