Picea koraiensis Nakai

Common Names

Korean spruce; Jel koreiskaya [Russian]; Hongpi yunshan [Chinese] (Farjon 1990).

Taxonomic notes

Syn: P. koyamai var. koraiensis (Nakai) Liou & Wang, pro syn.; P. intercedens Nakai; P. tonaiensis Nakai. One variety, P. koraiensis var. pungsanensis (Uyeki ex Nakai) Schmidt-Vogt ex Farjon 1990 (syn: P. pungsanensis Uyeki ex Nakai 1941) (Farjon 1990).

Description

Range

North Korea, mainly along the Yalu River. Also China: Jilin (Changbai Shan) and Russia: on the Ussuri River (Farjon 1990). In Russia only in southernmost Ussuriland, very rare (Vladimir Dinets e-mail 2-Jan-1998). Var. pungsanensis is retricted to several locations in North Korea (Farjon 1990).

Remarks

Picea koraiensis var. pungsanensis is on the WCMC Red List as vulnerable, population stable but known from fewer than five localities. It "is restricted to a few localities of upland coniferous forest along the coast at Keizanchin, Mt. Pungsan and Hamnam [North Korea]. There are no known measures to protect the species" (World Conservation Monitoring Centre - Trees).
