This species is a principal host to the dwarf mistletoes Arceuthobium aureum subsp. petersonii (in Oaxaca and Chiapas), A. durangense (in Durango, Sinaloa and Jalisco), A. globosum subsp. grandicaule (in southern Mexico), and A. oaxacanum (rare, in Oaxaca) (Hawksworth and Wiens 1996).
