Description

"A large tree, up to 20 m high and 100 cm in diameter, the branches widespread, horizontal, the branchlets glabrous. Leaves 5 in a fascicle, slender, 15 cm long, serrulate, bright green, triangular in cross section, with 3 resin ducts. Mature cones peduncled, ovoid, up to 10-20 cm long and 8 cm in diameter, rounded at apex or tapering to an acute point, sometimes slightly recurved, the scales rhombic, 3 cm long. Seeds ovoid, compressed, wingless, with a sharp edge all around, 8-12 mm long" (Li 1975).

Range

Central and western China; southernmost Japan; Taiwan: northern and central part at high altitudes (2,300-3,000 m) (Li 1975).

Observations

Not seen. A detailed record of two Taiwan locations is: Nantou Xian: Xini Xiang: Tungpushanchuang to Tatachiaanpu. Elevation:2500-2900 m. Hualien Xian: Xiulin Xiang: Yenhai Forest Road. Secondary broadleaf forest. Elevation:2280-2350 m. 120:30E. 24:11N. On exposed roadside. Tree ca. 2 m tall; fruits green (HAST Database).
