Taxonomic notes

Two varieties, the type (syn: P. mukdensis Nakai 1919; P. tabuliformis var. mukdensis (Nakai) Uyeki 1925; P. luchuensis var. shenkanensis Silba 1999) and henryi (Masters) Kuan 1983 (syn: P. henryi Masters 1902; P. massoniana var. henryi (Mast.) Wu 1956; P. massoniana var. wulingensis Qi & Lin 1988) (Li 1997). P. densata has been called a variety of this species (Silba 1986).

Description

Range

China and Korea (Silba 1986). The type variety recorded from China: Gansu, Hebei, Liaoning, Ningxia, Beijing, Shanxi, and Shaanxi; var. henryi from China: Hunan, Hubei, and Sichuan, with primary distribution in the Daba Shan area of Sichuan (Li 1997).

Observations

A rare old-growth forest can be seen on the heights of Wudang Shan in northern Hubei (ca. 32° 28' N, 111° 8' E), where it grows as a forest dominant along with Quercus aliena (del Tredici 1995).
