Its closest affinities are with C. kuesteriana from Tamaulipas, but it differs from that species in both cone and leaf morphology. The chromosome number of Ceratozamia sabatoi is 2n = 16, and the karyotype is similar to other species of the genus (Vovides et al. 1993).
